ARLO, THE VALLEY CAT

The rambling feline who enjoys going for walkies up steep hills

- By Chris Brooke

MOST cats like to stalk alleyways at night. But not Arlo – he prefers the fresh air and scenery of Britain’s most beautiful and dramatic countryside.

The nine-month-old has taken to the very uncatlike behaviour of walking for hours up hills with his owners and their dogs.

Crissy Lister, 29, and Marc Shaw, 31, from Halifax, West Yorkshire, put Arlo on a lead to keep him safe – prompting other ramblers to stare in disbelief. And when he gets tired the clever cat hops on to a backpack for a well-deserved rest.

Arlo was just a tiny kitten when he was first taken to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, last August.

Miss Lister, a veterinary nurse, said: ‘We got Arlo as an indoor cat but we ended up taking him camping with us in the Lake District. It was obvious that he wanted to walk, he was so determined to roam around.’

The rambling feline now has his own Instagram page to show off his adventures.

Miss Lister added: ‘He usually comes out three times a week for a good hour or two.

‘He’s not really scared of much, he chases things through the bushes just like the dogs would.’
