And the Pre-Fab Three were hot, too HERE COMES THE SUN TWO

-

IT CAPTURES three teenage lads thrashing on their guitars – at the very start of the long and winding road that propelled them to superstardom.

This grainy but previously unseen snap of The Quarrymen shows Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison in a Liverpudlian house – about a year before they became The Beatles.

The image, thought to have been taken in late 1959, was found in a purchase by music memorabilia specialists Tracks Ltd.

Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn said: ‘There are few Quarrymen photos and a discovery such as this is extremely rare. Within a year of this moment the Quarrymen had become The Beatles.’ The discovery

came as The Fab Four’s optimistic hit Here Comes The Sun was named as last year’s most streamed 1960s song. The classic tune, written by Harrison in 1969, received a boost thanks to the 50th anniversary reissue of the Abbey Road album, on which it featured.

It was one of a host of golden oldies that were among the most streamed songs in the UK in 2019, official figures compiled by the British Phonographic Industry reveal. The most popular song from before the millennium was Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which was played on devices 5 million times.

The 1975 track had a resurgence thanks to the film of the same name starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury.

Wham’s Last Christmas was 2019’s moststreamed 1980s song, while Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree took the top spot for the 1950s. Overall, up-todate Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi was number one in the UK with his 2018 hit Someone You Loved played 229million times on gadgets last year.

Fans can stream music on sites such as Spotify, letting them listen to their favourite tracks without downloading.
