BORIS Johnson last night told Donald Trump he is ‘feeling better and on the road to recovery’.

The PM spoke to the US President from his country retreat of Chequers where he has been recuperating from his three days in intensive care with coronavirus.

Downing Street said the PM had called Mr Trump partly to thank him for his messages of support.

No 10 declined to comment on the PM’s condition and said Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would continue to deputise for him.

Mr Johnson is expected to speak to the Queen by phone in the next 48 hours for the first time since leaving hospital on April 12.

A White House spokesman said Mr Johnson told Mr Trump he was ‘feeling better and on the road to recovery’.

‘President Trump and Prime Minister Johnson also discussed bilateral and global issues, including our shared commitment to reaching a United StatesUnited Kingdom free trade agreement.’

Mr Trump made several statements sending Mr Johnson his best wishes while he was in hospital.

His wife Melania has also called the PM’s pregnant fiancee, Carrie Symonds, to wish her well.

The President offered the use of US medical innovations to help treat Mr Johnson, but these were not taken up by his doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London.

A Downing Street account of the conversation confirmed that the two leaders had discussed the need for an international response to the pandemic and a new pledge to sign a post-Brexit trade deal ‘as soon as possible’.
