TOP SPIN ON THE TEST

- LAWRENCE BOOTH

WEST INDIES had been set 200 or fewer to win on 60 previous occasions in Test cricket, and pulled off their 55th successful chase. The other six games ended in draws. Arguably, that makes them the best chasing side in the game’s history.

JERMAINE BLACKWOOD continued to enjoy England’s bowlers. His match-winning 95 here took his Test record against them to 605 runs at an average of 55. Against everyone else, he has managed 864 runs at 24.

THIS was only West Indies’ second win in 21 Tests in England, stretching all the way back to Edgbaston 2000. In that time, their lone victory — set against 16 defeats — had come at Headingley three years ago.

WEST INDIES have not won a series in England since 1988, when a team led by Viv Richards triumphed 4-0. If they avoid defeat in either of the last two Tests in Manchester, they will retain the Wisden Trophy.
