ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, 9PM, CH5

THE Yorkshire Vet has been a hit for Ch5, so commissioning this remake of All Creatures makes perfect sense — James Herriot mentored vet Peter Wright, after all. Happily, it also proves to be quite good fun, especially from the moment Samuel West steps on screen a as the pipepuffing Siegfried, a man who takes a sadistic delight in putting his nervy new assistant, Glaswegian city boy James (Nicholas Ralph) through his paces. Ralph (pictured centre with Anna Madeley, West, Rachel Shenton and Callum Woodhouse) is more Scottish than Christopher Timothy ever was — and if you’re missing the original theme tune, stay tuned until the closing credits.
