Get tough, the German way

-

i Have just spent a few days in Germany and saw how vigorously the coronavirus rules are policed.

i was on a bus when a teenager boarded and stood directly behind the driver, where she could not be seen. She removed her mask and started to make a mobile phone call.

the bus came to a shuddering halt and the woman driver confronted the young girl, admonishing her in front of all the other passengers. the girl was almost in tears and got off the bus in disgrace.

on the news, a man who was supposed to be in quarantine was spotted in the local supermarket and fined 4,000 euros.

DAVID H. COX, Kidlington, Oxon. i Have worked as a key worker in a supermarket throughout the pandemic. i am going abroad for my annual week’s holiday and will have to isolate for 14 days on my return.

My employer’s policy is that the 14 days can be taken as holiday or unpaid leave. i have opted to split it half and half.

i am not low paid and do not claim benefits, so for one week i will not receive an income. Why am i being penalised for doing the right thing and following the government covid guidelines?
