Harper be entitled to £465,000 in legal aid?

-

IT’S a disgrace that the scumbags who killed PC Harper are getting legal aid to appeal their sentences. I wonder how his colleagues and all other police officers feel about this? Why should they put their lives in danger when the justice system lets them down like this?

JEAN THOMAS, Warrington, Lancs. IT IS wrong to give the impression that the defendants are receiving the legal aid money. In fact, it is going to their lawyers. It is only right that they should be defended properly. The point that needs to be made is the huge sums charged by lawyers, which isn’t the fault of the defendants in this awful case.

IAN JONES, Lingfield, Surrey.

I AM not in favour of denying legal aid to people it’s impossible to like, but the rules should be couched in such a way to stop it funding cases that are obviously undeserving.

JOHN COLLINS, Chelmsford, Essex. THE nonsensical legal aid bill charged to the taxpayer is a parallel of the nonsensical sentences handed down to those callous killers. DAVID EDWARDS, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.

I AM shocked and angry that £465,000 of taxpayers’ money is being spent on an appeal by three mindless thugs. They did not take the case seriously, clowning about after the verdict and showing no remorse for their hideous crime. The sentences were too lenient and now their lawyers are being funded to appeal. What kind of justice is this?

PEGGY MacNEILL, Harrow, Middlesex. I HAVE written to the Prime Minister asking why £465,000 is available to pay for an appeal by three killers when the NHS is crying out for money.

CAROLYN McNALLY, Manchester.
