It’s Boris the builder: HS2 work under way (at last)
HE’S vowed to build his way to a better Britain – and Boris Johnson joined the front line yesterday to see work begin on HS2.
As shovels hit the ground in Solihull, the Prime Minister said the ‘incredible’ scheme – launched in 2009 – would deliver not just ‘22,000 jobs now, but tens of thousands more high-skilled jobs in the decades ahead’.
He approved the high-speed route between the West Midlands and London in February, weeks after an official review found the final bill could reach £106billion – almost double the original budget. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told MPs last year that it could be 2031 until the first trains are up and running.
