AGUERO FIGHT TO BE FIT FOR CITY’S OPENER

- By JACK GAUGHAN

SERGIO AGUERO has been training alone on the eve of manchester City’s season, following a knee injury.

The Argentine last featured in June and has not been participating in sessions with Pep Guardiola’s squad this week before monday’s Premier League opener at Wolves. Aguero had initially hoped to prove his fitness to play a minor part in last month’s Champions League but progress has been slower than expected.

Aguero (left) scored 23 goals last season but only featured in 32 matches — his lowest number since joining the club from Atletico madrid nine years ago.

His dwindling appearance tally was down to two injury lay-offs — the first coming before Christmas — and increased the burden on Gabriel Jesus, who deputises up front in his absence. City are acutely aware that replacing the 32-year-old is their single biggest task in the transfer market over the next year, with Guardiola’s striking options limited without him.

As well as Jesus, raheem Sterling — who was top scorer last season — can operate as a central striker but has been most effective operating on the left side of City’s attack.

Meanwhile, new City signing Ferran Torres has set his sights on emulating his hero David Silva.

The 20-year-old, signed from Valencia for £20million, idolised Silva when he was at the mestalla and has been given his No 21 shirt after Silva left City to return to Spain this summer.

Torres said: ‘i have really good memories of watching him. i remember looking for David Silva above the rest of the players after training sessions.

‘I will try to give my best to be part of the history of this club. i will try to follow David’s steps.’
