A gift abused
AS SOMEBODY who owes my life to being the successful recipient of a liver transplant, I was appalled to read that Rachel Johnson’s husband has been given a replacement liver and, according to her, feels it has given him licence to indulge in drinking (Mail). This seems a slap in the face to the donor’s family, the specialist consultants and nurses of the NHS and those waiting for a liver transplant.
There are hundreds on that waiting list and, as there is a shortage of healthy donor organs due to lifestyle changes, many will die before a suitable donor organ becomes available. Receiving renewed life from an organ transplant is a precious gift and should be treated as such.
