LAMPARD HITS BACK IN MOURINHO ROW

- By ADRIAN KAJUMBA

FRANK LAMPARD dismissed Jose Mourinho’s claim that he was merely offering advice during their midweek touchline spat. But the Chelsea manager promised there will be no fall out with his opposite number today, due to his respect for Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson. Lampard locked horns with his former Chelsea manager Mourinho during their Carabao Cup tie on Tuesday, which Tottenham eventually won on penalties. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the war of words broke out and the Portuguese insisted he was reminding Lampard that managers need to be vocal on the sidelines when their teams are losing as well as leading. Mourinho referenced Lampard’s demeanour when his side were 3-0 down at West Brom last weekend to underline his point. He said: ‘I felt sorry for him because he was really sad and quiet in his chair.’ Ahead of Palace’s visit to Stamford Bridge, Lampard insisted his tiff with Mourinho was not an attempt to lay down a marker as a young manager. ‘I don’t think any remarks made on the touchline during the game can be called advice,’ said Lampard. ‘They can probably be wrapped up as advice after a game when you manage to get back in the game and win on penalties. I would always be happy to not just take advice from fellow managers, but everything around me. I think that’s what moulds you as a manager but I don’t think the Jose incident was ever advice.’ On facing Hodgson, under whom he won 16 England caps, he added: ‘I don’t want to pre-empt it but there’ll be no touchline spats with me and Roy tomorrow, because I’ve got too much respect for him and I think he’s just brilliant as a man.’
