FOREST TURN TO HUGHTON AFTER FIRING LAMOUCHI

- CONTRIBUTORS: Tom Collomosse and Sami Mokbel

CHRIS HUGHTON has been appointed Nottingham Forest manager after the Championship club sacked Sabri Lamouchi yesterday following a woeful start to the season. Forest announced the arrival of former Brighton and Newcastle boss Hughton just half an hour after making Lamouchi’s departure public. As Sportsmail reported in July, Lamouchi had been on borrowed time since the end of last season, when Forest’s dreadful form after lockdown cost them a play-off place. Hughton, 61, had been out of work since leaving Brighton at the end of the 2018-19 season.

DANNY WELBECK could emerge as an option for Premier League clubs following his release by Watford yesterday. The former England striker was among the highest earners at the club, meaning the club let Welbeck, 29, leave for free.

LIVERPOOL midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for coronavirus. Shaqiri, 28, is on Switzerland duty and is self-isolating. He is the third Reds player to contract Covid-19, after Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane.

LES REED will be replaced by his assistant John McDermott when he leaves his role as FA technical director at the end of the year, as revealed by Sportsmail last April. ‘We have every chance of winning a major tournament in the next four years,’ said Reed.

BARNSLEY head coach Gerhard Struber has left the club to take charge of MLS side New York Red Bulls. Austrian Struber, 43, who previously coached at Red Bull Salzburg, masterminded the club’s escape from Championship relegation last season. Adam Murray will take caretaker charge.
