OZIL TRIES TO SAVE GUNNERSAURUS FROM EXTINCTION!

- By ADRIAN KAJUMBA

ARSENAl exile Mesut Ozil has offered to pay the salary of the man inside the Gunnersaurus costume while the midfielder remains at the club. Jerry Quy — who was Gunnersaurus, as well as taking other roles at the club for 27 years — lost his job on Monday as part of Arsenal’s Covid-19 cost-cutting drive. His mascot role was deemed no longer essential with games behind closed doors and no fans to entertain.

However, £350,000-a-week Ozil, who is in the wilderness at the club, has offered to cover Quy’s salary — believed to be between £30,000 and £50,000. Ozil said: ‘i was so sad that Jerry Quy, aka our famous and loyal mascot and integral part of our club, was made redundant after 27 years. As such, i’m offering to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as i will be an Arsenal player, so Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much.’

Quy’s sacking, emerging on the day Arsenal signed Thomas Partey for £45million on £230,000 a week, has not gone down well with fans.

But some view Ozil’s gesture as a clever PR move by a player who recently refused to take a pay cut.

Ozil often uses his position and wealth to help those less fortunate. last June, he and wife Amine marked their wedding by paying for 1,000 children to have life-saving surgery.

it is unclear if Arsenal will take up Ozil’s offer and they insist Gunnersaurus is due to return when fans are allowed back. But will it be Quy or someone else in the suit?
