Hitler’s bar in shape of globe could fetch £200k at auction
ADOLF hitler’s attempt at taking over the world may have been thwarted, but he did manage to get his hands on a globe-shaped bar for his luxury yacht.
And now the extravagant feature that graced the teetotal dictator’s state vessel is for sale, after being kept in a basement, then a barn, for 70 years.
It is set to fetch up to £200,000 when it is auctioned for the first time this month.
removed from the warship-turned-yacht ‘Grille’ before she was scrapped in New Jersey in 1951, the bar was stored in Pennsylvania and later Maryland.
It consists of two steel hemispheres, one at the back that curves inward and another at the front curving outward.
Seen together from the front they look like a globe cross-cut with lines of longitude and latitude. The bar also comes with the original aluminium fittings featuring a sink and art deco brass tap, plus five original brass stools with padded seats.
Once the bar was removed from the 377ft Grille, its new owner mounted it on a wheeled, wooden-framed support.
It measures 6ft6ins tall, 8ft2ins wide and 7ft6ins front to back, with the barman entering through a small low side-door.
Bill Panagopulos, owner of Alexander historical Auctions, said: ‘ This is one of the most fascinating hitler relics ever offered. If you really want to make a statement it’s hard to do better than hitler’s bar.
‘ The bar and stools have remained untouched in a home and barn in rural Maryland for 70 years, kept by the son of the original purchaser who had installed the bar in his home’s basement as a curiosity.
‘Both the son and father were big history buffs but the father passed away and the son, who is now in his 70s, has decided that it is time to move it on.
‘Fittingly, the bar is a representation of the world which hitler arrogantly hoped to conquer.’ The Grille was launched in 1934 and was often enjoyed by the Fuhrer, despite his seasickness, and used to entertain allies such as Benito Mussolini.
