They exchanged details – but Keir drove off before Met cops arrived

First, a loud bang

SIR Keir was heading to his dry cleaners, Stitch & Clean, for an appointment on Sunday morning.

He was travelling down Grafton Road, where a right turn would have taken him onto the road leading directly to his destination. Unfortunately, there are no right turns allowed.

Bystander Nicolas Janes, 39, said: ‘I was walking and there was a bang. A loud bang. I didn’t witness it directly but could hear the impact.’ The IT developer added: ‘I saw what happened after. The cyclist was on the pavement, he was holding his arm. He looked like he was in a lot of pain. There were people helping the cyclist. He just remained on the floor in pain. They looked concerned for him.’

Cyclist’s anger

THE cyclist hit Sir Keir’s SUV on the driver’s side with enough force that the driver’s door was damaged, another witness said.

The man, who lives nearby, said it appeared that the Labour leader was doing a U-turn as he approached a busy junction. Daryl, 31, told the Mail: ‘The cyclist hit the car from the driver’s side. The side door was damaged and it was scuffed. When I went over to see what happened, I heard the cyclist say: “How did you not see me?” Sir Keir then reversed his car and parked up... the cyclist was nearly in tears, holding his left arm in pain.’ Daryl’s partner, Sam, also said Sir Keir’s car was in the middle of the road and it looked as though he had tried to perform a U-turn.

A Labour Party source denied this, insisting Sir Keir was trying to park when the incident occurred. However, the area around the junction is marked with double yellow lines.

Who did he speak to?

SIR Keir left his car to check on the cyclist, and gave his details to the injured man.

He told aides he spoke to a British Transport Police officer at the scene – taking down the officer’s badge number – and waited with the cyclist until an ambulance arrived before leaving. However, the BTP said Sir Keir had in fact spoken to an off- duty police community support officer.

A trip to the hospital

AN ambulance was called to the crash scene at 12.08pm and the cyclist was taken to hospital.

The ambulance crew called the Metropolitan Police at 12.20pm to report the crash. A police spokesman said the cyclist suffered ‘a minor injury to his arm’ and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The police probe

THE Met spokesman confirmed that ‘the driver of the car had stopped at the scene and exchanged details with the cyclist but... left before Met officers arrived’.

They added: ‘ Officers later attempted to contact the driver and left a message advising him to report the matter to police. [He] attended a north London police station later the same day. He was not arrested or interviewed under caution.’

Did he visit twice?

SIR Keir was photographed outside Kentish Town police station on Monday, prompting questions over whether he had made a second visit.

A Labour insider insisted he spoke to police only once – but he walked past the station again after his (postponed) appointment at Stitch & Clean.

His texts with cyclist

SIR Keir reportedly contacted the cyclist on Sunday night to check on him.

The pair are also said to have exchanged texts on Monday.

Did he break rules?

DRIVERS involved in an accident must provide their name, address and car registration details at the scene or face up to six months in prison.

If they cannot stop safely they must still report to a police station – or speak to a police officer, – ‘as soon as reasonably practical’. There is no suggestion Sir Keir failed to stop or report his role in the collision.
