I really want to be a mummy, says non-binary Sam
SAM Smith rejected all notion of gender last year, with the pop singer asking to be referred to as ‘they’.
But Smith has now revealed they want to be a ‘mummy’ as they talked about becoming a parent and complications over changing their pronoun.
The star, 28, is non-binary – a person who is not exclusively male or female and uses the pronouns they or them.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about wanting to start a family, Smith said they want to do it before they turn 35. ‘I want all of it. I want to have kids,’ the singer said.
‘I want to be with the kids and I want to watch them grow and be with them every day. I want to be mummy. I’m definitely going to do that at some point, but I’ve still got more in me.’
Smith, who is currently single, said they have too much ‘ambition’ to settle down right now. ‘I’ve still got ambition.
It’s an amazing job to have. Thirty-five is the latest I’m going to have a kid. That’s what I’ve decided.
‘So I’m going to work my ass off until then, hopefully find a boyfriend but they’re absolutely nowhere to be found anywhere in London.’
Smith also said identifying as they/ them has ruined conversations as it is ‘really difficult’ for some to understand. Despite family and friends adapting to the change, they said: ‘What I’ve learned this year is people don’t like to be wrong, and when people mess up a pronoun or something, they really don’t like it. It kind of ruins conversations.
‘It ruins moments. It’s really difficult. So I’ve had to just go into myself and try and deal with it in a real kind way... and just know everyone’s working on this.’
