William was ‘very ill’ with Covid in April

- By Rebecca English Royal Editor

PRINCE William was ‘ very ill’ after being infected with coronavirus back in April, according to Palace sources.

Although he was not hospitalised and did not require treatment by paramedics, he was left feeling ‘relatively poorly’ and did not undertake any official duties for nine days.

It is understood he had been struggling to breathe. The news was only revealed this week after the second in line to the throne mentioned his diagnosis to a member of the public at an official engagement.

The prince, 38, is believed to have fallen ill around the same time as his father, the Prince of Wales, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the beginning of the month.

William immediately selfisolated at Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ family home in Norfolk. The Duchess of Cambridge, and their three children, did not develop the virus. He received treatment and medical advice from royal physicians, it is believed.

Kensington Palace stood by its decision not to reveal the prince’s battle with the virus, saying he did not want to cause further alarm at a time of national crisis.

Royal author Penny Junor said: ‘It’s very odd, because we do normally know things that are regarded as in the public interest if anything happens to one of our leaders.’ Prince Charles, 71, made his diagnosis immediately known, although it is thought he suffered only ‘mild’ symptoms. It is understood that the Cambridges will spend the second lockdown in London, as Prince George and Princess Charlotte will continue going to school.
