Lumley’s plea on WW2 bombs

-

JOANNA Lumley has called for Second World War bombs found in British waters to be safely defused rather than blown up to protect marine animals.

The explosives are cleared before wind farms are constructed and they are usually detonated. But Miss Lumley, pictured, claimed this is ‘completely nuts’ as it causes ‘harm to our most precious whale and dolphin species’.

The actress said: ‘It’s crazy that wind farm developers, aided by government regulations that are far too relaxed, are able to just blow up bombs that are left over from the Second World War.’

There are believed to be 100,000 tons of explosives left in Britain’s seas and Miss Lumley, 74, has called for the bombs to be safely defused.

It comes amid UK plans for a huge increase in offshore wind capacity.
