Cull as bird flu sweeps farm
HUNDREDS of birds at a farm will be culled following an outbreak of avian flu. All 480 ducks and chickens on the site near Deal, Kent, will be killed to limit the spread of the disease.
The outbreak of the H5N2 avian influenza at the small commercial premises was confirmed yesterday. A 1km (1,100yard) restricted zone has been put in place while inquiries are being made to see whether it has spread further.
Public Health England said the risk to human health was very low and the Food Standards Agency said there was no risk to consumers.
Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss said: ‘Bird keepers should remain alert for any signs of disease, report suspected disease immediately and ensure they are maintaining good biosecurity on their premises.’
