English and proud of it

-

I AM not surprised that more people are referring to themselves as British because this has been engineered by the powers-that-be to do away with the english.

For more than 20 years, whenever I have filled in a witness statement or registered to vote, I have put down my nationality as english. But it has been crossed out and replaced with British.

If I were Scottish, Irish or Welsh, I would be allowed to state my nationality. But they have something that I certainly don’t: their own national parliaments.

P. L. UPSON, Braintree, Essex.

PERHAPS the reason a great many people think of themselves as British is because when they are asked for their nationality, english is not listed as an option.

Mrs PAULINE PASMORE,

Shepperton, Surrey.

I WAS born in england to a Scottish father and my husband is from Cyprus, a former Crown colony, so he uses the term British rather than english.

people can be proud of their roots and heritage from all over the world, but we need to recognise the value of us all being called British.

The poor Iranian family who drowned in the Channel trying to get here from France would have loved the opportunity to be called British.
