Is ignorance a valid excuse for speeding?

-

JENNI MURRAY, who passed her driving test in the 1960s, says she didn’t know a road with street lights is a 30 mph limit. As part of the local community speed watch team, I am surprised at how many people claim ignorance as an excuse for errant behaviour. Drivers shout abuse, make cat calls and threaten us. All of this because they will receive a letter from the community policing team about their poor driving, not points or a fine. Most drivers believe their driving is beyond reproach. They have little regard for how much danger they pose to other road users. DONNA LANGLEY, South Kyme, Lincs. WHY do so many drivers complain about getting caught speeding? The cameras are there to make our roads safer. Why do you feel aggrieved about having to fork out to pay your fine when it’s your own fault?

S. JACKSON, Cwmbran, Torfaen. THE answer to speeding is to have a satellite speed limiter fitted to your car. Then you can only travel at the limit for the road you are on. Sadly, these devices are not mandatory. But, of course, speed cameras are there to save lives, not make money . . .

M. HORTON, Market Bosworth, Leics. I WAS a truck driver for 46 years, have held a driving licence for 52 years and have received only two speeding tickets. Drivers know the limits, but still speed and then complain when they are caught.

P. CLARK, Wakefield, W. Yorks. THE headline ‘6,300 motorists snared in speed traps every day’ was incorrect. It should have said: ‘Why do stupid motorists keep paying speeding fines?’
