Manuka syrup for immunity support
COULD honey help to support your immunity in these concerning times? Some natural honey products can claim immunity benefits, as they have ingredients validated by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).
Look for an ‘immune system support’ logo on the label.
And now a new syrup containing Manuka and buckwheat honey has been designed specifically to defend and support the immune system.
As well as the two types of honey, ingredients also include propolis and six added natural vitamins and minerals.
NATURAL buckwheat honey, made by bees that collect nectar from buckwheat flowers, which are rich in important vitamins, is a good natural food supplement for general health.
One study in the United States found that a single dose given before bed to children with a respiratory infection, such as a cold, caused a significant reduction in coughing frequency at night, compared to over-the-counter cough medicines.
HIGH-STRENGTH (MGO 300 monofloral) Manuka honey (left), sourced from hives in New Zealand, is also an ingredient in the new ‘ immune defence’ syrup.
The active ingredient is methylglyoxal (MGO), derived from dihydroxyacetone (DHA), naturally present in the nectar of the Manuka bush.
The MGO present in Manuka honey is widely known for its antimicrobial activity.
BEES don’t just make honey. They also produce a substance called propolis that they use to repair their hives. Propolis has been used for hundreds of years as a natural remedy.
A 2016 study found paediatric syrup containing propolis was a helpful treatment for children with respiratory infections.
The new honey-based syrup also contains the key vitamins B12, B9 (folic acid), B7 (biotin) and C, linked in studies with strengthening the immune system, or maintaining a healthy mucous membrane.
Other natural ingredients include wild thyme and ginger root, which research has shown can help to relax the airways.
