One-stop shop
THe smoking ban didn’t kill pubs, supermarkets did (Letters). online shopping didn’t kill the High Street, supermarkets did.
Supermarkets used to just sell food. For anything else — clothes, shoes, jewellery, toiletries, homeware, electrical goods, stationery, greeting cards, books, newspapers and magazines — you would have to go to a specialist or independent shop in your local town centre.
But out- of- town supermarkets with huge free car parks have become one-stop shops for everything you need. Buying these items online is only the final blow to the High Street.
