Biden’s Gulf arms ban puts pressure on Boris
THE Prime Minister is under pressure to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia after Joe Biden vowed to end its war in Yemen.
Britain has supplied missiles, bombs and aircraft to the Gulf state as it fights alongside the neighbouring Yemeni government against Houthi rebels. But the new
US President declared on Thursday that the US would end arms sales and all other support for ‘offensive operations’ in the six-year Yemeni civil war, which has cost more than 100,000 lives. Shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy said: ‘Ministers must now take long overdue action to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia and end the UK’s role in the conflict.’
Downing Street said: ‘We will continue to assess all [arms] export licences in accordance with strict criteria.’
