Checking in... Bonnie Tyler Singer
DO YOU MISS TRAVELLING?
I FLEW to my holiday home in Portugal last March for a week, then lockdown came and I’ve been in the Algarve ever since.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT PORTUGAL?
THE mild climate, the people and the food — I love a pasteldenata [custard tart] and bacalhauabras [fish and chips].
HOW’S YOUR PORTUGUESE?
DON’T ask. I took an online course, but I’m afraid I’m struggling.
EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?
GOING to Porthcawl in Wales. I went paddling, even though I couldn’t swim.
FIRST TRIP ABROAD?
A PACKAGE holiday in Alicante with my boyfriend Robert before we got married.
We hired scooters and had a great time, even though I burnt my legs sunbathing.
HOW HAS TOURING CHANGED?
A LOT. I started out doing 45-minute spots between the bingo and the chicken in a basket in Welsh clubs. But nowadays I fly all over the world touring.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT TOURING?
EVERYTHING. I had to cancel more than 80 concerts around the world. As soon as it’s allowed, I’ll be back on that stage.
FAVOURITE PART OF WALES?
THE Gower coast, where I live. The scenery is sensational and it’s made for walking.
TRAVEL ESSENTIAL?
A MOISTURISING spray to keep my face hydrated on plane journeys.
GUILTY TRAVEL PLEASURE?
I LIKE a glass of red wine when I fly but I never drink before going on stage.
ANY FAMOUS TRAVEL ENCOUNTERS?
I ONCE found myself a seat away from Mariah Carey on a flight from New York. I’d heard stories she was a diva but she was lovely. We chatted over a glass of bubbly.
Bonnie’s new album, The Best is Yet To Come, is out on February 26.
