Making fuels of us

-

FIRST, motorists were urged by Tony Blair’s government to ditch carbonbelching, petrol- engine cars in favour of diesel. Yet these ‘greener’ vehicles turned out to cause more environmental damage.

Then, car giants deliberately installed cheat software to falsify emissions tests.

Now, another scandal. Drivers are being duped into buying hybrid vehicles which guzzle more fuel than advertised – making them costlier and less clean.

If cynical ministers and manufacturers keep conning them, they’ll find most motorists will simply buy cheaper, more reliable petrol cars before sales are banned in 2030, and drive them for years.

And what of No10’s green roads revolution then? It will backfire like an old banger.
