His rise and stunning fall

-

Born March 2, 1978, in County Meath, the son of a panel-beater with no link to racing, Elliott started going to local County Meath trainer Tony Martin while he was at school.

Became a successful amateur jockey in point-to-points and had 46 winners under rules, including a spell in Britain with champion trainer Martin Pipe.

Trained point-to-pointers before starting his full training career in early 2006 when his first runner — Brandon Mountain — was pulled up in the Fred Winter Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

First win as a trainer when Arresting scores at Perth in June 2006.

At 29, becomes the youngest trainer to win the Grand National with Silver Birch in 2007.

First Grade One win in Ireland when Jessies Dream lands the 2010 Drinmore Novices’ Chase.

Buys 78-acre Cullentra House Farm in 2011, building facilities from scratch to a 200-plus horse operation with facilities including an equine swimming pool and natural spa.

Has his first Cheltenham Festival winners when Chicago Grey takes the National Hunt Chase and Carlito Brigante the Coral Cup in 2011.

Wins the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2016 with Don Cossack.

Receives the pick of 60 horses moved from champion trainer Willie Mullins after a split with owner Michael O’Leary, boss of Ryanair.

Elliott-trained Tiger Roll wins the first of his back-to-back Grand Nationals in April 2018.

Wins seven races at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, headed by Envoi Allen in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, to take his tally to 32 Festival successes.

Picture of him sitting on a dead horse emerges last Saturday with Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) starting an investigation.

On Monday, BHA announce an interim ban on Elliott having runners in Britain pending the outcome of IHRB enquiry. Elliott receives support from his main backer, O’Leary’s Gigginstown Stud, but loses role as an ambassador of Betfair. It emerges the deceased horse was O’Leary-owned Morgan.

On Tuesday, the Cheveley Park Stud remove eight horses from Elliott’s stable, including Envoi Allen.

Yesterday, Elliott gets a 12-month ban from IHRB, six months suspended.
