Sindy vs Barbie
i READ with great interest the article headlined Barbie’s Warped World about how the doll twists girls’ perceptions of their body image.
Playing with sindy — more girl-nextdoor than Barbie — ranks among my
happiest childhood memories. I treated her as a mini-me, choosing a doll with chestnut hair like mine, and dressing her in home-made outfits that resembled clothes I owned or wished I did.
There were no Photoshopped Instagram posts to obsess over. But by the mid-1960s, Sindy was exclusively blonde and had lost weight.
I thank my lucky stars I had an old-fashioned childhood.
