Snow’s on way. Why now?!

After three months of lockdown, more snow could be on way today

WITH his bare legs, perhaps this jogger hoped for milder weather yesterday.

But two weeks into British summer time, and this was the snowy scene in Blanchland, Northumberland – and there may be more snow to come.

The return to pubs today promises to be a bitter occasion amid northerly winds and further wintry showers.

Anyone planning on venturing out should wrap up, with temperatures in most places struggling to reach double figures.

A band of rain – or sleet and snow on high ground – is set to clear Wales and the South.

It is due to be followed by mostly dry weather with sunny spells, but some showers could still occur, particularly in Wales, which may turn wintry.

The chilly prediction follows snow showers as far south as the Peak District and North Wales over the weekend.

Simon Partridge, of the Meteorological Office, said: ‘We will see fairly cloudy conditions at first across Wales and south-west England, which is where the rain, sleet and hill snow is likely.

‘Elsewhere it’s likely to be dry with sunny spells. It’ll still be chilly. Temperatures could reach 12C (54F) in the South West, but everywhere else is due to be 7-9C (45-48F).’ Wind chill could bring this down a couple of degrees further, the Met Office warns.

Maximum daytime temperatures in parts of the north Pennines could be as low as just 2C (36F) despite the sunshine.

But Mr Partridge added: ‘ The good news is it is an improving picture. We have high pressure coming in from Tuesday and temperatures are due to recover close to normal for the time of year, around 11-13C (52-55F). It’ll be mostly dry with sunny spells.’

The chance of isolated showers remains, however.

Mr Partridge also said overnight frost remains likely for the week. Patchy mist is possible, too, especially in rural areas.

Tonight is likely to be the coldest, down as low as -4C (25F).

Mr Partridge said: ‘It might turn a little warmer next week, but temperatures will still only be near or just above average.’
