No defence for cuts

-

IN THE same edition of the Mail were reports about severe cutbacks to the Armed Forces and Russia causing international concerns over its movements of troops near the Ukrainian border.

Once more we have a Government that promises it will add strength to the military yet does otherwise.

It’s not helped by putting recruiting in the hands of a private company that has a woeful reputation, has been paid a lot of money for poor enlisting numbers and is running a terrible woke marketing campaign.

Other issues include poor military accommodation for our troops and their families and a lack of care for retiring servicemen and women and those who helped our military in distant lands, but who we abandon to terrorist attacks.

We can’t afford to cut back on our defences on the whims of politicians. Danger is always just around the corner.

NICK SMITH, Blandford Forum, Dorset.

PREPARING for a possible invasion of Ukraine, the Russians have moved antiaircraft missiles, tanks and big guns to the border and relocated warships to the Black Sea. Ukrainian soldiers have dug trenches.

M. R. GRIBBLE, Bristol. RUSSIA has reportedly 83,000 troops lined up on its border. Britain is expected to send up to 100 infantry troops to Ukraine. Now that’s what I call a deterrent. PETER CROWTHER, Northwich, Cheshire. RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin must be trembling that we are to send 100 troops to Ukraine. Why do we persist in trying to be a world power?

L. GILES, Coventry.
