Killer cop is put on suicide watch in jail
DEREK Chauvin has been taken to the highest security prison in the state of Minnesota and put on suicide watch.
Having been led from the courtroom in handcuffs following his conviction for the murder of George Floyd, Chauvin was booked into the Minnesota Correctional Facility Oak Park Heights, where he will remain until sentencing, due to take place at the end of June.
The Minnesota Department of Corrections released a photo yesterday of Chauvin on his arrival, staring down the camera in an orange, prison-issue top.
The killer was placed under surveillance at the prison in case he harmed himself. As a former policeman and having been convicted of such a high profile crime, he could also be a target for other inmates. For that reason, he was moved into ‘administrative segregation’, meaning he is in a unit alone.
It is the only level 5 maximum security prison in Minnesota, the highest level in the state, and is home to around 500 of the most serious offenders.
The jail has never seen a successful escape and has only had one killing behind bars since it opened in 1982.
The cells measure 7ft by 10ft and each contains a bed, table, toilet and sink.
