Let them eat cake
The letter about a Yorkshireman wishing to teach some northern plain- speaking reminds me of my late father.
A few years back we were in a very nice tea room in the Cotswolds. After we were served our pot of tea a nice lady came round with a trolley and asked: ‘Would sir like any gateau?’
My dad called a spade a spade. he replied: ‘No thank you, I don’t want any posh stuff like that, but I wouldn’t mind a piece of that cake.’
