Pledge we cannot break

-

DAVID CAMeROn, Theresa May and Boris Johnson have all spoken highly of our Armed Forces and veterans at the dispatch box and like to mention the Armed Forces Covenant. But their praise and the Covenant are often just worthless words. Our

northern ireland veterans being a case in point.

like his two predecessors, boris Johnson has forgotten that the Covenant safeguards of fair treatment and not being disadvantaged due to military service depend on the Government upholding them. not just those in the private sector who might choose to do so.

it would seem that Johnny mercer did realise this and had the courage to speak out.

Northern Ireland veteran, name and address supplied. i Fail to understand why british soldiers are taken to court. the ira saw no problem in targeting civilians, police and soldiers, but cry ‘ Foul!’ when they became the target.

CLIFF HOPKINs,

Frimley, surrey. this Government should be ashamed of the way they have treated Johnny mercer over his fight for protection from prosecution of northern ireland veterans.

ever since tony blair’s government ‘ accidentally’ sent out letters pardoning members of the ira for their atrocities, successive governments have promised the same for northern ireland’s veterans. each has promised to stop these witch hunts but has been too gutless to actually pass a law protecting former soldiers. Says a lot about being british when you are too cowardly to stand up for british veterans. JuNe KARTRIeBeR,

Cheam, surrey.
