PRESSURE mounted on President Nixon yesterday to tell the ‘full truth’ about the Watergate espionage scandal. And Republican leaders are urging him to act so as to avoid irreparabl­e damage to the party.

PRESIdENT de Klerk apologised for apartheid yesterday, saying he deeply regretted the loss of freedom and dignity inflicted on South Africa’s black population. ‘It was not our intention to deprive people of their rights and to cause misery, but separate developmen­t and apartheid led to just that,’ he said. ‘In so far as that occurred, we deeply regret it.’

CLORIS LEACHMAN (1926-2021). The U. S. actress starred in TV series Lassie (as the dog’s owner) and The Mary Tyler Moore Show (as Mary’s landlady). She scooped an Oscar for her role in 1971’s The Last Picture Show. In 2008, she became, at 82, the oldest celebrity to compete on the U.S. version of Strictly Come dancing, dancing With the Stars. CAPTAIN SIR TOM MOORE (1920-2021). The World War II veteran from Keighley, West Yorkshire, raised more than £32 million for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his garden over the course of ten days to mark his centenary. Sir Tom became the oldest person ever to have a No 1 hit, with his duet with Michael Ball, You’ll Never Walk Alone. He said of the coronaviru­s crisis: ‘At the end of the day we shall all be OK again.’
