LEAGUE ONE

WEEKEND ROUND-UP

- TOM FARMERY

WHAT a comeback, what a promotion. At 3-0 down to

LINCOLN — the only side who could have pipped them for second place — PETERBOROUGH roared back. On 96 minutes, Darren Ferguson’s side drew level at 3-3 when the division’s top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris (right) converted a penalty, securing second place and a spot in the Championship. It is Ferguson’s fourth promotion as Posh boss and the 49-year-old said: ‘It’s absolutely incredible. This club means so much to me and this is the best promotion I’ve ever had. I got quite emotional. I had all sorts going through my mind at 3-0 down but what a bunch of players.’ The draw also secured Lincoln’s play-off place. And they were joined by SUNDERLAND, who overcame

PLYMOUTH 3-1 for their first victory since the start of April. Despite concerns over the fitness of Charlie Wyke and Aiden McGeady, Sunderland boss Lee Johnson backed his players to return the club to the second tier for the first time since 2018. He said: ‘The boys have been phenomenal, so to be third in the table is partial success. ‘I don’t care who we get in the play-offs. There will be no cleverness from us. We will come out of the traps like greyhounds.’

WIGAN seemed to be sinking without trace earlier in the season, still feeling the effects of going into administration last year and a 12-point deduction that relegated them to League One. Supporters raised close to £1million to keep the club afloat but an inexperienced squad meant they went into the season facing a second relegation. But boss Leam Richardson has kept them up. Despite losing 3-1 to HULL, defeats for ROCHDALE and NORTHAMPTON — which confirmed relegation for both — meant Wigan secured safety. Richardson said: ‘I give great credit to every person involved in helping us achieve this.’
