Meanwhile, in Scotland... fans left cold by Euro 2020 defeat

- By Arthur Martin

SCOTLAND’s first game in a major tournament for 2 years ended in heartache for the Tartan Army and the thousands who took the day off work to support them.

The 12,000 fans in Glasgow’s Hampden Park stadium plus the many more in fan zones were stunned as the Czech Republic – helped by a superb 50-yard goal from Patrik Schick – beat them 2-0 in the Euro 2020 Group D game.

More than 800,000 fans are thought to have tuned in while working. Scottish schools allowed pupils to watch the game in class.

Meanwhile, Priti Patel defended England fans who booed the team for taking the knee against Croatia on Sunday. The Home Secretary said that jeering ‘was a choice’ for the supporters. She said: ‘I just don’t support people participating in that type of gesture, gesture politics.’ But Labour leader Keir Starmer said players should not be booed for taking the knee.
