Maddie prime suspect breaks silence in jail cell letter rant
THE prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has written a bizarre letter from prison protesting his innocence.
Convicted paedophile Christian Brueckner issued a typed ‘press release’ denouncing the investigation of him as an ‘unbelievable scandal’ in his first public comments since being named last year.
The 44-year- old German, who is currently serving a seven-year-prison term for rape, said the prosecutors investigating him should resign for ‘persecuting an innocent person’. Brueckner wrote that they were ‘unsuitable for office’ and ‘bring shame to the legal system’.
The astonishing claims were made in a letter he wrote from prison published yesterday by German newspaper Bild.
His outburst comes a year after German prosecutors revealed that he was their prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007. Lawyers said they have evidence that Brueckner abducted and murdered the three-year-old but have refused to reveal what it is.
In the letter dated May 8, Brueckner, who has a previous conviction for sexually abusing two girls in Germany, wrote: ‘Charging an accused is one thing. [This is] something completely different – namely, it is an unbelievable scandal – when a public prosecutor starts a public campaign of prejudice before a court case is opened.’ Brueckner then called on Brunswick public prosecutors Hans Christian Wolters and Ute Lindemann to resign. He wrote: ‘Both are proving... that they are unsuitable for office [to serve] the honest and trusting German people. You bring shame to the legal system.’
Brueckner is in jail for raping a 72-yearold American in Praia da Luz in 2005 – two years before Madeleine was snatched. He was convicted in December 2019.
