Don’t dance around Covid: get jabs now

-

The Government has decided to implement a two-jab entry policy for nightclubs from the end of September. Why not now? It would encourage younger people, who think they’re fireproof, to get the jab and thereby protect everyone from the spread of Covid. even though it’s no longer legally required, I’m still wearing a face mask in shops because I want to protect myself and the people around me. Freedom day also means freedom from illness.

TREVOR COLLINS, Grimsby, Lincs. FReedoM day for the younger members of society lasted precisely 17 hours. Boris Johnson has decided to mandate Covid passports for entry into nightclubs and crowded venues from the end of September. This is because only 65 per cent of this age group have had their first vaccine. As usual the public is being blamed for the rise in infections and this is the Government’s solution to the problem. I never thought I would be living in a dictatorship where freedom of choice is no longer an option if you wish to live your life as you did before the pandemic. I see the need for as many people as possible to be vaccinated, but it would seem the Government requires 100 per cent compliance before all shackles are removed.

M. BARNES, Withernsea, E. Yorks. The plan to make being double jabbed a requirement for nightclub entry from September is insufficient. Lots of people packed close together in an indoor venue is an obvious potential Covid super-spreading event. The mechanism to prove that you have been vaccinated is already in place since, according to the Government website, you can get a Covid pass for foreign travel or as a condition of entry to a venue. nightclubs are required to have security on their doors so it should be a simple matter to insist that only those who can show their identification and evidence of vaccination are allowed in. The most likely result of the current plan will be that a lot of young, unvaccinated people will go to nightclubs and potentially spread Covid throughout the summer. And then in September they will start to complain as the deadline for the requirement for full vaccination nears.

ADEYEMI BANJO, London SE15. WhY only nightclubs? If we are to feel safe going out, Covid passports should be required for theatres, cinemas, pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and sports venues — in fact, any place where there are large groups of people. CHRIS HuMPHREYS, Bristol.
