GB HIGH JUMP COACH SUSPENDED AFTER COMPLAINT OVER HIS CONDUCT

- RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

THE coach of two Team GB high jumpers will be absent when they compete in Tokyo today after being suspended. Sportsmail understands Fuzz Caan, a UK Athletics-employed coach who works with Morgan Lake and Emily Borthwick, is being investigated following a complaint around his conduct. Caan was notified prior to the Olympics and did not travel to Japan. He declined to comment but is believed to be challenging the claim. A statement from UK Athletics read: ‘An employed coach has been suspended pending an internal investigation. No further comment is available at this time.’ Lake, a finalist at Rio 2016, and Borthwick will attempt to navigate qualifying this morning ahead of Saturday’s final. Meanwhile, Sebastian Coe believes ‘spectacular’ Keely Hodgkinson will stand on podiums for years to come after her 800m silver on Tuesday.

The two-time Olympic champion said: ‘She was pitch perfect. What she has done is spectacular for her age. She does have that (special) quality. ‘If she trains well and safely, she should be around for a long time.’

■ AT THE last Olympics, Andre De Grasse grinned at Usain Bolt in a semi-final and then got schooled. Five years on, one of the many heirs to the sprinting throne finally had a golden moment. The Canadian’s 19.62sec run to win the 200m was blistering and beat the twin forces of the US, Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles, into silver and bronze. De Grasse’s win followed an even more impressive display from Sydney McLaughlin, after the 21-year-old American slashed 0.44sec off her own world record to win gold in the 400m hurdles with an astonishing run of 51.46sec. Elsewhere, Kenya’s Emmanuel Korir won the men’s 800m title.
