AUGUST 9, 1941 A rATION of less than half a pint of milk a day for adults will come into general operation on October 1. The exact amount will be fixed later and the ration will be on a weekly basis. No ‘supplement’ to the ration by purchasing milk by the glass in cafes or milk bars will be permitted but milk will, of course, still be available at these places for tea, coffee and cocoa. AUGUST 9, 1988 THe DUCHeSS of York gave birth to a daughter, Beatrice, last night with her husband by her side. The 6lb 12oz princess, who is fifth in line to the throne, and her mother were well after the ten-hour confinemen­t. The arrival was greeted with the popping of champagne corks and jubilation by the crowd outside London’s Portland Hospital.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

MeLANIe GrIffITH, 64. The U.S. actress (right) has had three actor husbands: Don Johnson (whom she married and divorced twice), Steven Bauer (star of Scarface) and Antonio Banderas. She has also had relationsh­ips with Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and ryan O’Neal. Griffith said her one regret was plastic surgery that she tried to have reversed. She said: ‘Hopefully, I look more normal now.’ ANNA KeNDrICK, 36. The 5ft 2in Oscarnomin­ated U.S. actress and singer was in her first Broadway musical at 12. Known for driving a second-hand car and always flying economy, she says: ‘even if I had all the money in the world, it just seems wrong.’ Kendrick, who has been called ‘Hollywood’s smartest actress’, said that though everyone expects her to be nice when they meet her: ‘Pygmy ferret cornered and ready for a fight is more like it.’

PHILIP LArKIN (1922-85). The Coventry-born poet (right) dubbed ‘england’s most miserable genius’, said he regarded ‘sexual recreation as a socially remote thing, like baccarat or clog-dancing’. He was a jazz critic for The Daily Telegraph and the librarian at Hull University for 30 years. He was chosen as the nation’s best-loved poet of the previous 50 years in a survey by the Poetry Book Society. THOMAS TeLfOrD (1757-1834). The civil engineer and architect, born on a Scottish Borders farm, was nicknamed The Colossus of roads and has been hailed as ‘the man who built modern Britain’. He oversaw the constructi­on of the Menai and Conwy suspension bridges in Wales, almost 1,000 miles of roads in the Highlands and a canal across Sweden.
