THREE days after Atom Bomb No 1 fell on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, Atom Bomb No 2 fell on Nagasaki at 4am yesterday. Hours after the explosion, dust and smoke rising to 20,000ft completely covered the naval base city of 253,000 people.

BORN ON THIS DAY

RHONDA FLEMING (1923-2020). The American actress was nicknamed ‘The Queen of Technicolo­r’ because of her bright red hair, green eyes and porcelain skin. Fleming, who was born Marilyn louis, starred in Tropic Zone opposite Ronald Reagan and Gunfight At The o.K. Corral alongside Kirk Douglas and Burt lancaster. She married six times and died aged 97.

JACK HALEY (1897-1979). The U.S. actor, who played the Tin Man (right) in The Wizard of oz, acted opposite Shirley Temple and Ginger Rogers during his long career. He made his last public appearance two months before his death, presenting an oscar alongside his oz co-star Ray Bolger, the Scarecrow.
