Henderson contract ‘will get sorted’, vows Klopp

- DOMINIC KING

JURGEN KLOPP has promised there will be a resolution to Jordan Henderson’s contract situation as he celebrated a new deal for Virgil van Dijk. Henderson, Liverpool’s captain, has entered the final two years of his contract and was frustrated earlier this summer when talks about extending his stay petered out. The impasse led Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to believe there was a chance of prising the midfielder away from Anfield.

Liverpool have been busy renewing the terms of a number of key players and Van Dijk yesterday followed the lead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson in committing his future. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are also in a similar position to Henderson but more talks have been held recently with Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, and progress is being made. Klopp would never have allowed Henderson — a player who performs a huge role for him on and off the field — to leave in this window and the German made it clear that he expects the 31-year-old to follow Van Dijk and Co in signing a new deal. ‘It is important but it will happen,’ said Klopp. ‘It will get sorted, however that will be, there’s no doubt about that. ‘I spoke to him on Thursday and it looked like he was in good spirits, yes.’ Van Dijk’s new deal runs to June 2025 and Klopp — who sanctioned his £75million acquisition in January 2018 — put his progress into perspective when saying: ‘Wow, imagine what it would cost to buy him now!’ Van Dijk is fit to start at Norwich this evening and Klopp added: ‘After that very difficult last year, that he is back on track, training and preparing for hopefully a very successful future at this club. It is great, great news.’
