Street scams to watch out for

-

■ CARD SKIMMERS

FRAUDSTERS have been known to fit cash machines with skimming devices that record the details of your card, including the number, expiry date and your full name.

The small machines are usually placed in the slot where you insert your card and spray painted to match the outside.

Before you use your card, check to see if the slot has been tampered with. For example, the LED light above it may be missing or there could be scratches, sticky residue or parts of the ATM could look newer or a slightly different shade.

■ ‘LEBANESE LOOP’

THIS ruse involves fraudsters inserting devices into the cash machine’s card slot to stop your card being ejected. Instead it is sucked back in, leaving the victim to believe the bank has retained their card. Someone may then appear to offer help which involves the victim re-entering their Pin. When you walk away, they recover your card and use the Pin they saw you type.

■ CAMERAS AND FAKE KEYPADS

FRAUDSTERS could also have installed tiny cameras on an ATM or replaced the keypad to capture your card details or Pin. Check for anything strange on the machine and keep an eye out for small holes that could view the keypad.

■ MACHINE LURKERS

SOME scams involve no technology at all. Beware of anyone standing near you when you are withdrawing cash. Criminals may distract you while you are using the ATM by asking questions or dropping something so they can take your card.
