Glory! Proms finds patriotic voice again
THE Last Night of the Proms brought back its traditional performances of Land Of Hope And Glory and Rule, Britannia on Saturday.
A full audience at London’s Royal Albert Hall waved Union Jacks – amid a sea of European Union flags – and belted out the lyrics despite previous calls to have the songs dropped over their ‘jingoistic elements’.
Last year instrumental-only versions were played, with some blaming Covid restrictions and others claiming the decision was a ‘woke’ reaction to the lyrics’ alleged links to colonialism and slavery.
