Tuchel: Euros snub left Chilwell drained

- MATT BARLOW

THOMAS TUCHEL admits Ben Chilwell was left worried and mentally drained by his summer of rejection with England. Chilwell (right) was in Gareth Southgate’s squad at Euro 2020 but did not play and has since lost his Chelsea place to Marcos Alonso as his post-tournament rest delayed the start of his pre-season training. The 24-year-old has not appeared for club or country since the Champions League final in May and was omitted from the England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers. ‘It was, for him, a tough Euros,’ said the Chelsea boss. ‘There were chances where he thought he could have played and he did not. You feel part of the team but you don’t feel it really if you never wear the shirt. ‘Then he had a break and it was hard for him to totally relax and get his personal disappointment off the shoulders. I felt he was mentally tired, still worrying about the situation.’ Tuchel, who has talked it through with Chilwell, added: ‘He is in the race now. He is in good mental shape, attitude and good shape on the pitch.’
