ENGLAND HATCHING PLOT TO HOST 2031 WORLD CUP

- WILL KELLEHER

ENGLAND are preparing to bid for the 2031 Rugby World Cup which, if successful, would see the country host the tournament twice in just 16 years. With the 2023 competition in France, and Australia the frontrunners for 2027, England want to be the next host. From the 2015 World Cup the RFU generated revenue of £228.1million, so 2031 could provide a huge boost to the governing body after Covid rocked their accounts. New RFU chair Tom Ilube wants to kick off the bid process soon. ‘We would like to bid for the 2031 World Cup,’ he confirmed. ‘That would be really exciting to have it here. You could imagine what it would be like and I think that really gives us a focus as well.’
