YOU don’t have to travel far to get to a world-beating, fabulously entertaining attraction in the UK. Theme parks, ancient monuments, country houses, glorious gardens and a host of one-off seasonal events: so many of them are right here on our doorstep.

So why not make the journey part of the holiday?

Travel by train and you can cut stress levels and help the environment. You can also spread out, coffee at hand and stretch your legs.

You can forget about park-and-ride and expensive multi-storey car parks. Trains take you to the heart of most towns and cities. It means you can walk to the places you want to see – and, talking of walkies, dogs can normally come too.

Train companies can also be useful sources of information for events and attractions around their stations – sites such as GWR.com for Great Western Railway have sections on more than a dozen places, from the cider fields of Somerset to the Queen’s favourite home in Windsor.

So, whether you want to rediscover the joy of live performances at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre, see the Rock ‘n’ Roll with Me David Bowie exhibition in Brighton or pull on a hard-hat and go underground at the old Geevor Tin Mine near Penzance, take the train. And an awesome autumn awaits.
