IT’S already enjoyed huge success at the Baftas and Golden Globes.

And The Crown continued this year’s winning streak at the Emmy Awards, picking up 11 accolades, including best drama series.

Olivia Colman, 47, who played the Queen in the third and fourth series of the Netflix hit, won lead actress in a drama series and Josh O’Connor, 31, was named lead actor for his role as Prince Charles.

They were among British nominees to appear from a separate hub in London for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards which went ahead in Los Angeles on Sunday.

orange gown – paid an emotional tribute to her father, who died during the coronavirus pandemic.

She beat off fierce competition from her co-star Emma Corrin, whose performance as Princess Diana has been widely praised.

Miss Corrin, 25, looked delighted for Miss Colman, clapping from her seat, dressed in a bizarre yellow strapless dress. She teamed it with fingerless long gloves, long black nails, and a strange swimming style hat.

Tobias Menzies, who played Prince Philip, and Gillian Anderson, who starred as Margaret Thatcher, triumphed in the supporting categories.

Miss Anderson was later asked by a US reporter if she had talked to the former Prime Minister about the role. Lady Thatcher died in 2013.

The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan picked up the award for outstanding writing for a drama series, and Jessica Hobbs picked up the directing gong. The awards tally also includes the Creative Arts Emmys, which were presented last week.

Netflix’s chess drama – The Queen’s Gambit – picked up 11 awards including outstanding limited or anthology series.

The star, Anya Taylor-Joy, who dazzled in a pale yellow silk halter Dior Haute Couture gown, missed out on the lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category to Kate Winslet – who wore a fitted black dress – for Mare Of Easttown. Ewan McGregor was honoured in the actor equivalent category for his role in the fashion biopic Halston.

Miss Taylor-Joy later changed into a pair of yellow shorts, cropped top and cape.

Elsewhere, Michaela Coel became the first black woman to win the outstanding writing in a limited series prize, for her work on the BBC’s I May Destroy You.

The British rising star, 33, who wore a neon yellow twopiece, dedicated the award to sexual assault survivors. British stars of feel-good football comedy Ted Lasso, Hannah Waddingham, 47, and Brett Goldstein, 41, also picked up awards.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, 51, wore a red strapless gown with thigh-high split as she accompanied her husband Michael Douglas, who was nominated in one of the comedy categories.

The 2021 Emmys saw the return of a live audience, those at the Los Angeles event having to show both proof of full vaccination and a negative Covid-19 test.
