It’s the first new pylon for 100 years... to a T!

- By Alex Ward

NATIONAL Grid has started installing T-shaped pylons – the first new design in nearly a century.

The structures, consisting of a single pole and cross piece, have electric cables hung from them in a diamond ‘earring’ shape. They will replace the familiar tree-like ‘lattice’ appearance of Britain’s current pylons. The T-pylons are 115ft tall and take up a smaller footprint compared to the lattice design as well as being 50ft shorter.

A total of 116 T-pylons are to be installed along a 36-mile route from Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, in Somerset, by 2025 and will see 249 older ones removed.
