Prince Philip’s ‘mustard on ceiling’ prank

-

PRINCE William says his late grandfather drove the Queen to distraction by covering the ceiling in mustard for fun.

In a tribute programme, he reveals that the Duke of Edinburgh would get family members to hold a tube of the sauce in their hands and then take off the lid when dining at Balmoral.

‘He would squish your hands together to fire the mustard up into the ceiling,’ recalls William laughingly. ‘He used to get into a lot of trouble with my grandmother for covering most of the places where we had lunch with mustard.’

The programme features interviews with all Philip’s children and adult grandchildren. The idea was to celebrate his 100th birthday in June but the programme has since become a tribute following his death in April.

Prince Harry says: ‘More than anything I miss his sense of humour. But I miss him more for my grandmother because I know how incredibly strong she was with him there.’

Prince Charles describes how his father would watch him play football as a child and shout: ‘Stop scratching your backside and do something!’ ÷ Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers is on BBC1 at 9pm tomorrow.
